Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has handed in a transfer request.
The outgoing United manager saw his team beat Swansea City in his last match at Old Trafford, with Rooney excluded from the matchday squad.
Asked by Sky Sports' Geoff Shreeves why Rooney was left out, Ferguson replied: "I don't think Wayne was keen to play simply because he's asked for a transfer.

"I think he wanted to think that through in his mind and it's maybe a good idea. We aren't going to let him go.
"I think he's maybe a little bit frustrated after being taken off once or twice in the last few weeks."
Rooney has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Chelsea. Reportedly United's top earner on £300,000 a week, he has two years remaining on his contract.
Ferguson also said he decided at Christmas to retire at the end of the season after the death of his wife Cathy's sister.

"Things changed when Cathy's sister, Bridget, died and she's isolated a lot now and I think I owe her a lot of my own time.
"For 47 years she's been the leader of the family and looked after our three sons, sacrificed for me and now she's got all the grandchildren."
