A “significant” blaze which broke out at a Tesla showroom is under control.

Fifty firefighters tackled the blaze in Crawley, West Sussex on Saturday afternoon.

A Tesla spokeswoman said: “The fire at Tesla’s Gatwick Service Centre has stopped and we are working with the fire department to learn more about what caused this incident.

“We can confirm that no Tesla staff or customers were injured or hurt.”

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said six engines were in attendance at the scene in County Oak Way, Crawley after the fire broke out just before 10:30am.

Tesla said “early signs” indicate that the fire was not sparked by one of the vehicles.

People were advised to avoid the busy area, after West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service described it as a “significant” fire.

The incident comes a day after the US electric car manufacturer announced it was “winding down many of our stores” over the next few months and concentrating on online sales.

The firm has 18 showrooms in the UK and Ireland, including the one in Crawley.
