Fleabag Season 2 Finale: 7 Loose Ends That Need To Be Tied Up In Episode 6

Starting with the obvious: what's going on with the Priest?!
|

It seems to have gone by in the blink of an eye, but the second series of Fleabag is almost at an end.

The new episodes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Bafta-winning BBC Three show have surpassed our expectations, delivering even more laugh-out-loud scenes, thought-provoking moments and deep, deep cringes than we even anticipated.

Things were left on quite the cliffhanger in episode 5, and with only one more to go, there are still a fair few loose ends that we can’t wait to see the resolution to.

Here’s what we’ll be keeping an eye out for...

First off, what’s going to happen with the Priest?

The obvious biggie, the last scene of the penultimate episode saw the Priest telling Fleabag he couldn’t sleep with her because he would end up falling in love with her… only for the two of them to immediately have sex.

Fleabag and the Priest’s unorthodox relationship has been the focal point of the series, and between his crisis of faith and her finally finding someone to open up to, there’s been plenty for us to unpack along the way. Now they’ve finally done the deed, we’re dying to see where they go from here.

A happy ending would probably be a little bit cheesy by Fleabag’s standards, but by the same token, we definitely wouldn’t be mad if that did actually happen, and there’d be just enough mess between her family’s reaction and the fact that, oh yeah, he’s a Priest that it wouldn’t be your typical naff rom-com resolution.

What went on between Claire and Klare (hmmm, less funny written down, isn’t it?)?

The last we saw of Claire, she was leaving her stepson’s bassoon behind and walking off with her Norwegian work partner, Klare, suddenly feeling more at ease about her (admittedly, pretty horrific) new hairstyle.

Given that Claire has done little to hide her feelings for her colleague – “it has to go like cockwork” and “let’s fuck all night” being just two of her unfortunate Freudian slips so far this series – we’re intrigued to see whether anything transpired between the two of them. Which actually brings us nicely onto our second point...

Is Claire going to leave her terrible, terrible, really terrible husband?

Fingers. Crossed. Seriously, though, well done to Brett Gelman for playing Martin so well that we wince every time he comes into view, just like Fleabag does.

He obviously suspects that his marriage’s days are numbered, hence the confrontation at Fleabag’s café, and we can honestly say we hope he’s right and Claire really is about to come to her senses and ditch him. Even Jakey (who, by the way, is played by Celia Imrie’s son, Angus!) is in favour.

But then again, haven’t we been here before with Claire and Martin at this exact same point in series 1?

What’s going on with that lawsuit?

That whole legal mess is probably our least favourite subplot of Fleabag series 2, mostly because it introduced us to that godawful sexist lawyer (billed as Hot Misogynist in the credits).

It did give us the chance for some really gripping confrontational scenes between Fleabag and Martin, and allowed us to see just how loyal to her sister Claire has become after that mess at the end of series 1, but… we just can’t with that lawyer. He’s the worst.

Even though the whole thing simply going away might not be the most realistic outcome, this is one area we especially can’t stand to imagine Martin coming out on top in.

What’s going to happen at this wedding?

So far this series, we’ve had bloodshed at a family dinner, awkwardness at a village fete and total chaos at a work awards ceremony.

The moment the five episodes have been building up to, though, is the wedding between Dad and Godmother, and given how dramatic and a tiny bit emotionally exhausting the series one finale was, we know Phoebe Waller-Bridge is going to pull it out of the bag this time around. We are expecting high drama.

More specifically, are we going to get to see Godmother in a wedding dress?

Like Martin, Olivia Colman’s character is someone we find ourselves wincing at before they’ve even had the chance to say anything odious.

But while we hate Godmother, her upcoming wedding is surely an undeniable opportunity for an iconic comedy fashion moment. Like Claire’s hair, but in dress form, and on someone we really, really hate.

What’s the significance of the Priest noticing Fleabag’s pieces to camera?

The weird thing about Fleabag is that she’s always broken down the fourth wall, but until the mid-point of series 2, no one else had ever noticed it before.

However, as the Priest has got to know our anti-heroine on a deeper level, he’s begun to notice her “going somewhere” when she says a piece to camera, in a great example of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s unique approach to storytelling.

We’re curious to see how this plays out in the finale, and indeed whether Fleabag will go down the Sex And The City route and have us find out everyone’s names in the show’s last moments, building that fourth wall back up as she enters the next phase of her life.

The final episode of Fleabag series 2 will be made available on BBC Three on Monday 8 April, airing on BBC One that night at 10.35pm.
