With over 500,000 cases of food poisoning reported in the UK every year, when does feeling slightly under the weather turn into 'I think I've got food poisoning'?

Whether it's from poultry, vegetable, fruit or beef, the time in which food poisoning takes to develop will depend on the type of bacteria and how much contaminated food was eaten, says the NHS - but it can take as little as two hours for you to start feeling the effects.

In most cases, food poisoning can be treated at home but it is important to keep your fluids up.

"Dehydration is a risk because you will lose fluid through vomiting and diarrhoea. To speed up your recovery, you should eat when you feel up to it (the gut sometimes needs time to recover and food may cause diarrhoea even if you feel better)," says the NHS.

"Stick to foods that are easily digested, such as toast, crackers, bananas and rice."

However, if the vomiting and diarrhoea lasts for more than a couple of days, it's important that you visit your GP.
