A 16-year-old boy has died after reports of a row between a group of men in Leicester.

Three men, aged 29, 34 and 35 and an 18-year-old who was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries after what police described as "an altercation" have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The 16-year-old was found injured at the scene in Freeman Road North on Tuesday evening just before 8pm, but died later after being transferred to Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Leicestershire Police said their enquiries were "in the very early stages" and appealed to anyone with information to come forward.

The force said in a statement: "The street was busy at the time of the incident and officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity and witnessed what happened."

A spokesman said they would not confirm at this stage whether the altercation took place in a house or in the street, and did not give details of any weapon that may have been involved.

Freeman Road North, between the junctions of Saltersford Road and Uppingham Road, and a house in Broad Avenue have been cordoned off as forensic examinations take place.
