Game Of Thrones Stars Slam 'Insulting And Absurd' Petition To Rewrite Season 8

The Change.org petition has reached nearly one million signatures.

The petition to rewrite the final series of Game Of Thrones has been gathering serious pace all week, but the cast have absolutely no time for the backlash.

Two of the show’s stars have spoken out against the fan petition, which follows a number of controversial developments in the HBO fantasy series, as it nears a million signatures.

Bran Stark actor Isaac Hempstead Wright has branded it “ridiculous” and “absurd”, while Jacob Anderson, who plays Grey Worm, called it “insulting”.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Isaac said: “It’s just absurd. I can’t even fathom it. It’s just ridiculous.

“It’s ridiculous that people think they can just demand a different ending because they don’t like it. I have stupidly taken it quite personally, which obviously I shouldn’t. In my opinion, it’s a great ending.’

Jacob - also known as rapper Raleigh Ritchie - told US radio station Hot 97 FM: “I think it’s so insulting, whatever you think of the show.

“If you saw how hard people worked on that show, nobody would be flippantly saying like, ‘remake the show’.”

He continued: “I’ve seen people I’ve known for like eight years, who are just really happy, fun people, those night shoots I saw people switch. You saw it in people’s eyes, like 55 consecutive nights… those people worked those hours and worked that hard regardless of what you think of the episode.”

As of Saturday lunchtime, the Change.org petition, which calls for the final season to be remade with “competent writers”, had over 950,000 signatures.

It was set up after the penultimate episode, which saw Daenerys’ decision to torch the city of King’s Landing, along with the innocent people in it, with many fans claiming it was a betrayal of her characters.

Arya and Gendry’s romance has also been a topic of debate, as has the decision to kill Cersei and Jaime Lannister with a load of falling rubble.

Writing on the petition page, creator Dylan D wrote: “David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.

“This series deserves a final season that makes sense.

“Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”

The TV version of Game Of Thrones overtook George RR Martin’s books quite some time ago, despite the writer being five books ahead of the show when the first season aired.

George has made no secret of his disappointment at the timeline, which left him no choice but to tell the showrunners plot secrets in order for them to finish the programme without any source material.

The final episode of Game Of Thrones airs on Monday at 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic.
