Parents looking for unusual baby names are increasingly turning to Game of Thrones for inspiration, but they could have cut out the middle man by using a more traditional source - baby name books.

George R R Martin - the creator of the popular fantasy series - has admitted he used baby name books to find his characters' unique names.

"Names are hard. There's no easy answer to that. I have a library of What To Name Your Baby books, even though I've never had a baby," he said at a reader event this week.

"And I'm always picking up new What To Name Your Baby books."

George, you should be looking at our baby names finder with its database of 44,000 names, some of them very strange indeed.

He added that he had tried turning to online fantasy name generators that spit out up to 50 names at a time, but he said 'they all turn out to be "Grisnopple"'.

"A lot of fantasy names are too much to me, they're too difficult to pronounce," the 65-year-old added.

According to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, last year in England and Wales 187 baby girls were named Arya (up from 27 in 2012) and 50 were named Khaleesi (a name that first appeared on the list in 2011).

There were also 11 boys named Theon, seven named Bran, six named Tyrion and three named Sandor.
