The first full trailer for the much-anticipated Gavin & Stacey Christmas special has dropped, and it’s fair to say there are some real treats in store.
After quietly inserting a new scene at the end of the series three finale on iPlayer last week, BBC bosses have offered a further look at what to expect when the Barry and Essex families are reunited after 10 years off our screens.
Here’s six highlights from the trailer that we just can’t wait to see more of...
1. Another classic Christmas cover
Gavin and Smithy’s rendition of Do They Know It’s Christmas? was the stand-out moment of the 2008 festive special, and it seems they are serving up second helpings – this time with added Pam and Mick, which can only be a good thing.
2. Meeting the kids
While we’re not really here for the children dominating the episode, we’re intrigued to see Neil, The Baby again now that he’s 12, as well as meeting Gavin and Stacey’s child, who was still in her belly at the end of the original series.
Moreover, we’re excited to see how Nessa is coping with parenting a near-adolescent, and how Pam, Mick and Gwen are as grandparents.
3. Pete and Dawnie
After not being announced in the original casting, we’re delighted to see Julia Davis and Adrian Scarborough reprising their roles as the forever-quarreling couple, and more importantly, we can’t wait to find out what Pete has done this time to risk falling out of the “trust tree”.
4. Pam continuing to be Pam
Alison Steadman doesn’t have to do much to raise a laugh as Gavin’s overbearing mum Pam, and she’s already serving up some classic lines in the trailer, which we’re sure is just a taste of things to come.
“Mick, open that bottle of wine” is instantly iconic.
5. Uncle Bryn struggling with hosting Christmas
We saw more of this in the scene the BBC released last week, but Bryn hosting Christmas has disaster written all over it, and we’re dying to know what pedantic Pam will have to say about it all.
6. A musical reprieve from Nessa and Bryn
Nessa and Bryn were an unlikely musical duo when they performed Islands In The Stream together during Gwen’s birthday party in the original series, with the song later being released as a single in aid of Comic Relief.
The pair will be back on the mics again as they do a spot of karaoke during the gang’s Christmas Eve celebrations – but the question remains, what will they be singing?
