When you've gotta go, you've gotta go. But while a trip to the bathroom is a rather straight-forward experience for most people, it can be a difficult and even dangerous experience for members of the trans community.
According to a report published by The Transgender Law Centre in the US, transgender people have been refused access to the appropriate facilities at their place of work or school, while others have been attacked in public bathrooms.
It's little wonder, therefore, that a gender-neutral bathroom sign has gone viral, attracting more than one million views in just 10 hours.
The photo was uploaded by Reddit user GrahamTheftAuto, who wanted to share his new employers "casual approach to gender neutrality".
While many have praised the employer's open-mindedness, there are some who are not so convinced.
When one commenter asked why "every bathroom had to be a social statement", there were a few on hand to explain magnitude of the gesture.
"This shows trans people that the workplace cares about them and are on their side," wrote one Reddit user.
"Having that sign is an incredibly empowering gesture that has the potential to create a very strong culture of acceptance within a workplace. And that's to be lauded. It's small, but speaks volumes."
According to HuffPost College, the number of gender-neutral bathrooms has grown in recent years in the US. They can often be found in city-run facilities, workplaces and college campuses.
HuffPost blogger Masen Davis, a transgender advocate, says that trans people need safer restrooms.
"Transgender people go to work, drive our kids to school, go to the movies, and go out to dinner, and yes, like everyone else, we even go to the restroom," Davis wrote. "It's time to ensure that transgender people, and anyone who might be more masculine or feminine than our outdated notions of gender would allow, can use the restroom just like anyone else."
