George Clooney said Donald Trump and his family have been dumped “into the dustbin of history” following the riots at the US Capitol.
The president addressed thousands of supporters at a rally near the White House on Wednesday, egging them on to march to Capitol Hill, where rioters breached barricades and fought past police to storm into the building.
Hollywood actor George said it was “devastating” to watch the Capitol, the seat of American democracy, being ransacked.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, he told The Business podcast it was the “straw that breaks the camel’s back” following four tumultuous years of Trump’s term in office.
He said: “This puts Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr, Ivanka, all of them, into the dustbin of history. That name will now forever be associated with insurrection.”
There have been mounting calls for Trump to be removed from office before his term ends on 20 January.
In a video address on Thursday, which saw him finally concede the election result to Joe Biden for the first time, Trump condemned the violence, saying rioters had defiled the seat of American democracy and said his focus would now turn to ensuring a smooth transition.
However, Trump did not address his role in inciting the riots in his video.
It came after the US president had called the rioters “very special”.
“I know your pain. I know you’re hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us,” he said in a video posted on social media.
“But you have to go home now. We have to have peace. We have to have law and order. We have to respect our great people in law and order...
“So go home, we love you, you’re very special. You’ve seen what happens, you’ve seen the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel, but go home and go home in peace.”
President-elect Joe Biden blamed Trump for “inciting a mob to attack the Capitol”, accusing him of trying to “silence the voices of nearly 160 million Americans who summoned the courage in the face of a pandemic that threatened their health and their lives and cast that sacred ballot”.
Many other public figures have condemned the events that happened at the US Capitol, including Hollywood star Chris Evans and singers John Legend and Pink.
Piers Morgan has also publicly ended his 15-year friendship with Trump, who he branded “dangerous, deluded and despicable” and a “monster”, calling for him to be removed from office.
