I'm 32 (stage age 29) but I must already be going through a BEFORE mid-life crisis.
No I'm not sleeping with a 20 year old. No I haven't bought myself a bigger pair of boobs, and no I'm not going through the menopause.. BUT I have reached the end of the road when it comes to my day job and I need to do something worthwhile with my skills and talent.
I've written plenty of blogs about my temp day jobs and how I can't stand the world of offices. Excitement over the new pens. Mindless gossip over the IT guy and the manager dancing at the Christmas party. And everyone thinking the monthly fire drill is "drama for the day".
It all happened when I got a phone call from a job agency asking me if I was interested in another new reception job. It sounded fine apart from one thing. I had already worked there. And I was fired from there also. Good job I can think fast and find a reason I don't want to go for the job, even if it WAS an unrealistic reason. So I've worked at THAT many companies I'm being offered recycled jobs! I felt like Samantha from Sex and the City when she had slept with all the men in New York, she started to sleep with them a second time round!
After years of interviews, being asked the same mind numbing questions. "Why do you want to work for the company?" After years of being paid pennies to be abused and shouted at by stick up clients. And after years of being so bored I've ended up Googling how many time the word DUDE is said in the Big Lebowski. (161 if you are interested).
So, I decided enough was an enough. I needed to pull myself out of this rut. I realised I needed to wake up knowing I have a good day ahead of me before going to a gig. So I came up with a list of jobs where I can use my skills (entertaining, engaging with people, talking, communicating, meeting people, networking, bringing out confidence in people) and a list of all the things I hate (uniforms, sucking up to people, being given mindless tasks to, sitting on my arse all day, getting the tube at 8.30am.. do I need to go on?) and I came up with a brain wave of setting up my own business.
Realistically it will take about 6 months to put together. I look forward to telling you, my readers about it all at a later date.
So for now, it's back to my temp job ( I'm sat here now with nothing but this computer, my phone and people walking past this reception desk either ignoring me or being told "I smell delicious" by an old man), and some good comedy gigs to look forward to.
Have a good weekend and if you don't enjoy your job, walk out. NOW (you won't regret it).
