A family has revealed holiday snaps which appear to show the ghostly apparition of a young girl in Victorian dress creeping into several frames.

The child appears as a faint black-and-white outline in pictures taken at the Castle Museum in York.

The images are two years old but were only discovered when John Burnside found his long-lost mobile phone memory card in his pyjama pocket.

“When I phoned my mum she at first thought it might be a little girl that my sister lost, but my dad spotted that the little girl in the picture was in Victorian dress.”

A spokesman for York Castle Museum told Huffington Post UK it was waiting to see the original pictures before making an comment.

In 2000 staff member Sherri Steel told the BBC the building was housed in a former prison were executions were carried out.

“People seem to be far more willing to give odd noises a supernatural explanation in a place like this.”

Highway man Dick Turpin is said to have spent his final night in the former prison’s cells before he was hanged and the museum also appeared on medium Derek Acorah’s Ghost Towns programme in 2006, where film crew reported evidence of ghostly activity.
