A 12-year-old girl was hit in the face by a stray rocket at an organised fireworks display as spectators dived for cover.

The girl was knocked to the ground after being hit on her cheek at around 6.30pm on Sunday at Littleborough Cricket Club in Rochdale.

The girl, thought to be a pupil at Wardle High School, was kept in hospital overnight where she was treated for a burn on her right cheek. Thankfully, she did not suffer any more serious injuries.

Gemma Waterworth, 31, said her daughter Shannon Walsh, 11, attended the display with the injured girl and Shannon's father.
