A two-year-old was caught on CCTV walking alone across a dark, busy street to buy sweets from a petrol station.

In the video – which beggars belief – the toddler is seen leaving her apartment in Detroit wearing a padded blue coat and boots.

She then casually crosses the road and goes into the petrol station where she browses the aisles.

Then, to the shock of the owner Mohamad Bazzi, she puts some money on the counter and asks for sweets.

Fortunately, Mr Bazzi realised something was very much amiss so locked up the shop and called the police.

The petrol station owner told local news: "The little girl started walking around this aisle and this aisle."

Authorities arrived within minutes and the toddler was taken into custody.

The toddler's parents were tracked down at the housing complex across the road from the petrol station around an hour later.

When they arrived at the police station they were given an earful by Detroit officers.

Police chief Kevin Coney told the parents: "There's a (two)-year-old girl walking across the street at night!

"To a gas station! Fully dressed! And you come in, like, 'So what?'"

Asked how the little girl could have left home without anyone noticing, Chief Coney replied, "The parents might have been upstairs at the time, and she just walked outside."

A reporter for Inside Edition exclaimed, "That child is both lucky and very smart."

Chief Coney agreed, saying, "Yes, she is!"
