Fans of the HBO series Girls will know that Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna and Jessa are defined by their different personalities and unique sense of style. As for their hair? When it comes to characterisation, it plays an important part.
Sherry Heart, the show's hairstylist, explained why she chose each of the girls' looks in an interview with Huffinton Post Style.
Here's what we learned (and yes, the hairstyles and the plot are more closely linked than you might think...)
1. The character and her hairstyle are perfectly matched.
It sounds simple, but Heart thought carefully about how each look reflected that particular character. "Hannah is trying to get a writing career going and doesn't have time for her hair – hence a very simple style for her," she revealed. "Marnie has taken to wearing her hair long and often looks more polished as part of her effort to appear as if her life is well put together when, in fact, it's quite the opposite. Jessa has always been a free spirit and uses her hair as a goddess art form."
2. Hannah is no hair expert.
Although Heart "loves" Hannah's cropped style, there's a reason why she doesn't make it look polished and glossy. "I leave it on the messy side to try and convey that Hannah can't really do her own hair well," she said.
3. Marnie's hair is too good to change.
Marnie's hair "is such a beautiful colour all by itself", so there'll be no dip-dyes or crazy cuts coming her way anytime soon.
4. Jessa and Shoshanna are the most fun to style.
When asked who she likes working on the most, Heart responded, "They both are the most creative I can get." When Shoshanna wore four topknots at once during season three, it required a hair map. Really. As for Jessa's long, flowing locks - it's a dream. "It's a blank canvas and I am the artist," Heart gushed. (Yep, she's our hair crush too.)
