Speaking after the band were confirmed, festival organiser Michael Eavis said: “Metallica are one of the most popular bands in the world! And they really are a phenomenal live act. This is a band that can sell out stadiums in pretty much every country on the planet.”

Meanwhile the group spoke about their forthcoming Glasto spot, which will see them become the first ever thrash metal band to headline the festival since it began over four decades ago, on their Twitter page on Thursday, writing:

The group’s singer Lars Ulrich also told BBC Radio 1: “I feel ecstatic. We've been waiting for this phone call for years.”

As well as playing hits from their vast back catalogue, which spans over 25 years, the group are also expected to be debuting new material, after Lars revealed during a panel discussion last year: “2014 will be all about making a new Metallica record.”

The festival will take place over June 27-29, with a massively varied lineup which boasts the likes of Dolly Parton, Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding, to name but a few.

However, not everyone is happy with the announcement that Metallica will be headlining the festival, namely Oasis fans who had previously suspected the Manchester-based band might be reforming for the iconic music festival after a series of cryptic tweets from Liam Gallagher.
