Glastonbury Festival campers are braving heavy downpours as the first bands take to the main stages.

The warm sunshine of the past few days has disappeared and intermittent rain means wellies are being put to good use with fields quickly turning to mud.

It came as world-renowned physicist Professor Stephen Hawking cancelled his appearance at Glastonbury due to "personal reasons", Cambridge University said.

The scientist, who has amyoltrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), had been due to appear at the Kidz Field tomorrow morning.

A spokesman for Cambridge University said: "For personal reasons Stephen will not be able to visit Glastonbury this year."
