A storm was brewing in Israel yesterday. And the apocalyptic windy conditions may have left Maccabi Haifa goalkeeper Assaf Mendes apoplectic after he scored a freak own goal.
In a 60-minute friendly match between Haifa and Dynamo Kiev, Mendes saw his own drop-kick sail back to bounce past him in a scene reminiscent from the Bedknobs and Broomsticks football match.
Played ahead of Israel facing Ukraine, to stress the surreality of the occasion, the reason the match only lasted an hour was because one of the goals blew away. The palm trees bellowing would suggest that even jumpers for goalposts would have lost against mother nature.
