Anyone who watches the Great British Bake Off knows that a lot is expected from the contestants who enter that famous tent, but in this week’s episode, many viewers felt that the judges had asked for too much.
The latest instalment saw the return of bread week, a Bake Off staple that has consistently seen some of the show’s most impressive moments ever (who could forget Paul’s “bread lion” in series 6?).
For this week’s technical challenge, the bakers were tasked with creating eight identical burger buns, but what viewers weren’t expecting was that they’d also have to create vegan burgers to go inside them, which would also be judged.
The challenge saw Amelia fall to the bottom of the pack, after sending Prue Leith into a coughing fit with her chilli-infused burgers.
Eventually, Amelia became the third baker sent home from the contest, but many viewers felt that the burgers shouldn’t have been part of the judging process, in what has always been a baking contest…
Although bread week saw the end of Amelia’s Bake Off journey, Michael made a much more successful attempt, and was named Star Baker for the first time.
With cakes, biscuits and bread already ticked off the list, next week will see the 10 remaining contestants tackling dairy week, in what will be a first for the competition.
Now in its 10th series, Bake Off frequently introduces new themes to keep things fresh, with last year’s contestants taking part in the first vegan baking challenges.
