Guns N' Roses founding members Slash and Duff McKagan are set to reunite with Axl Rose as the band headlines this year's Coachella festival in California.

Although the hard rock band never broke up, lead vocalist Rose has been the only original member left in the band since bassist McKagan and guitarist Slash left in the 1990s.

It is the first date to be officially announced by the revived band, whose songs include Sweet Child O' Mine and November Rain.

Rose tweeted: "Ok,ok ... It's "confirmed! Guns N' Roses is Headlining Coachella 2016!! See Everyone There!!"

Stoke-born Slash and McKagan both posted an image on Twitter and Instagram of the band's classic logo combined with the Coachella background.

Rose, McKagan and lead guitarist Slash have not played a live show together since July 1993 in Buenos Aires - and relations between Rose and Slash have long been strained.

However, they had reconciled by 2014. In an interview with Sweden's Aftonbladet, Slash said: "It was probably way overdue, you know ... it's very cool at this point."

It is not clear whether the band will feature the full classic line-up, which also included guitarist Izzy Stradlin and drummer Steven Adler.

LCD Soundsystem and Calvin Harris will each headline the other nights of the festival.

This will also be a reunion for dance-rock group LCD Soundsystem, who played a farewell show at Madison Square Garden in 2011.

In 2010, frontman James Murphy had promised Pitchfork: "It's not like some big, dramatic ending - we've talked about if in five years we'd want to play again we'd do it."

Five years later, on Christmas Eve, the band released their first new song since the split - titled Christmas Will Break Your Heart.

Other artists lined up to perform include Ellie Goulding, Sufjan Stevens, Foals, Disclosure, Chvrches, James Bay and Sia.

The festival takes place over two weekends between April 15 and 22 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.
