Hair Trend Alert! Forget The Dip-Dye - It's All About Technicolour Highlights Now

Just when the dip-dye trend was branded officially over, Dalston-based hair salon Bleach London launched a range of home hair dye kits in rainbow colours on the high-street.

It was a savvy business move that catered to 2013's obsession with pastel tresses and sparked what's set to be this summer's biggest beauty trend - technicolour highlights.

With a kaleidoscopic spectrum of Bleach shades including Awkward Peach (think soft sherbet orange) and the candyfloss-esque Rose, the temptation to experiment with more than one colour has played a huge part in the rise of the rainbow look.

"Technicolour highlights are becoming just as requested for us as dip dyed ends," said Sapphire Lewis, salon manager of Bleach Dalston. "It's a more fun festival look for hair and a popular trend for the summer."

Girls in London's East End are on board, but does this really mean multicoloured highlights are set to sweep across the nation?

Mintel trend forecaster Lucy Cornford said it's not out of the question.

"The emergence of more bright hair colour ranges coming onto the market is making consumers more confident to dip in and out of the look than ever before," she said.

The development of products like hair chalks is also making DIY hair dying more accessible to customers.

"In the past, people have linked bright hair colourants with unnatural and unhealthy chemicals," Cornford told us.

"These chalks mean customers can experiment with dying their hair for festivals or nights out without worrying about having green hair when they turn up for work on Monday morning."

She added: "If they can apply something to just the ends for an ombre or highlighted look, there's less contact with the scalp and girls feel more confident using them at home."

So is the multi-tone trend here to stay? Cornford compared it to the nail art phenomenon. "It's been a huge hit with younger consumers, but I can't see it taking off with more mature women," she said.

Still, for anyone who's ever dreamed of having My Little Pony-style hair, there's never been a better time to try it.
