Money worries are keeping more than half of British parents awake at night, as they ponder the expense of entertaining their kids over the summer holidays.

The number of parents stressed about finding enough money to cover the cost of days out and activities has increased by 31 per cent since last year, according to a recent survey.

This increase is unsurprising when you consider that collectively parents are set to spend £1.5billion on days out and activities this summer, according to the research by VoucherCodes.

That's £393 million on day trips, £343 million on visits to theme parks and other attractions, £304 million on meals out, £206 million on going to the cinema, £183 million on sporting activities, and £138 million on going to the theatre.

When you put it like that, it is worrying!

But are these unfeasibly large figures really worth losing sleep over?

One in eight parents say they feel pressured by their child's expectations, with a quarter claiming their child doesn't understand the sheer cost of the activities they demand.

But it seems we may actually to be to blame for putting a lot of this pressure on ourselves, as just a fifth of kids aged four to 16 say visiting attractions is the most important thing about the summer holidays, while 52 per cent say they just want to have fun with their friends and family.

There are plenty of good reasons not to get a good night's sleep - such as night feeds, toddlers who refuse to sleep in their bed and children who are impossible to tire out - but the cost of keeping children entertained really needn't be one of them.

We have loads of ideas for the summer break, and easy ways to help make it a summer to remember without the cost.
