Prince Harry will today lead a poignant service remembering those who died during combat operations in Afghanistan.

The 30-year-old will join family and friends of armed forces members killed during the campaign when he attends the service of dedication to inaugurate the Bastion Memorial, which bears the names of all 453 UK personnel to have died in Afghanistan.

The service at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire will take on added significance for Harry, who saw action in Afghanistan twice, most recently in 2012, as an Apache helicopter co-pilot and gunner.

Those attending will hold a minute's silence in memory of the fallen. The event will be one of the last official engagements as a serving member of Britain's armed forces for Harry, who will leave the Army this month following a 10-year career.

The reconstructed memorial replicates the design of the wall in Camp Bastion, Helmand province.

From Friday, the public can visit the Bastion Memorial all year round at the arboretum in Alrewas, the UK's centre of remembrance.

Last year Harry attended the last remembrance service in southern Afghanistan as British troops began to pull out of the country following a 13-year presence.
