An academy super headteacher who is paid £120,000 has hinted he wants a pay rise.
Liam Nolan, chief executive of Perry Beeches Academy Trust, Birmingham, said his 'fantastic' salary is 'low' compared with those in other industries.
He told the Birmingham Mail he runs four schools with a total budget of £30 million, but people managing similar businesses in other sectors earn more than him.
Figures from the Department for Education last week showed 900 school leaders in England were paid at least £100,000 in 2013/14, a rise of almost a third in a year.
The National Union of Teachers has criticised pay in academies, saying taxpayers' money 'should be used appropriately for the education of children, not for the benefit of a few'.
But Mr Nolan said that heads' pay should be reviewed and suggested he deserved a pay rise. He currently earns marginally less than the Prime Minister's £142,000 a year salary.
He said: "I am paid a fantastic salary of £120,000. Some head teachers are paid as much or even more than me to run one school. I run four schools and have to look after a budget of £30 million.
"Compared to other industries whose bosses run similar budgets I would say the salary is low in comparison.
"I would of course back any review into salaries as you never know I could get a pay rise. But I think £120,000 is a fantastic salary to do a job I absolutely love."
