Ross and Clare Simons, the tandem riders who died after being knocked off their bicycle in Hanham, Bristol in a hit-and-run incident, were reportedly about to start IVF treatment for their longed-for baby.
The Express claims Mr and Mrs Simons, who married 20 months ago, had revealed to close friends that they had been trying for a baby and had been given the go-ahead for IVF.
Diane Pullin, a friend of the family, met Clare, 30, and Ross, 34, for dinner on Saturday night and says the couple were excitedly sharing their baby news.
"They'd just had news that they were able to have fertility treatment," she told the paper. "They desperately wanted children and it wasn't happening. They'd just been given the go–ahead. They were so happy on Saturday night."
A neighbour said yesterday it was one of the first times the Simons had used the tandem, which they had bought in recent weeks as a replacement for mountain bikes that had been stolen.
A 38–year–old man later handed himself into the police and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. A 35–year–old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
