A 'holographic' pool table which projects the path of your shots before you play them has hit the web.

The amazing invention, which takes some of the guess work out of snooker and 8-ball, uses a computer to work out where your cueball will travel - as long as you hit it straight and true. It also figures out the path of any ball you'll hit - though it clearly has limitations.

PoolLiveAid is is the work of Luis Sousa, Ricardo Alves, and J.M.F Rodrigues of University of the Algarve, Portugal.

They used ceiling-mounted camera, which knows the size and properties of the table, the angle of the cue and the cue ball's position to work out where the path (should) lead.

It's just a beta project at the moment - but the prospects for future augmented reality apps are pretty astounding.

Can't imagine we'll see it in the Crucible any time soon, though...
