A number of homes have been evacuated as armed police attend a property in Liverpool following reports there is a man inside "in an agitated state".

Emergency services were called to the house at Oxford Drive in Waterloo around 5.30pm on Monday, Merseyside Police said.

A police cordon was in place in the area and the road was closed.

A police officer outside the property appeared to be pointing a gun towards the front of the house, the Liverpool Echo reported from the scene.

In a statement the force said: "Emergency services were called to Oxford Drive at about 5.30pm to a report of a man in an agitated state inside a property.

"A cordon is in place and Oxford Drive has been closed while officers attempt to engage with the man and neighbouring properties have been evacuated as a precaution."

The force incident manager confirmed they were overseeing the incident but could not give any further detail.
