PRESS ASSOCIATION -- A British man has been killed by a shark while on his honeymoon in the Seychelles.

The Foreign Office confirmed the death of a Briton, named by police as 30-year-old Ian Martin Redmond, from Lancashire, on the islands where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recently had their honeymoon.

"We are providing consular assistance to the next of kin," said a Foreign Office spokesman.

Local police confirmed the man was killed off Anse Lazio beach, in the Baie Sainte Anne district of Praslin island. An employee at the four-star La Reserve hotel confirmed the man was staying there with his wife.

Chantal Andre, who works at Anse Lazio's beach restaurant, saw the attack and told the Daily Mail the man's wife did not cry and seemed to be in total shock when she accompanied her to hospital.

The newspaper said many of the beaches and snorkelling spots close to Praslin were closed. Director for tourism Alain St Ange told the newspaper: "We are taking this very seriously. If there is a rogue shark out there we will try to catch it."

Jeanne Vargiolu, 56, the owner of Le Chevalier restaurant on the beach, said police told her the man had lost one arm and had the flesh stripped off one leg and had holes in his chest and stomach from shark bites.

"I saw his wife talking to about five people, I think one was English, that she still had hope he was still alive," she added.

According to reports, a 36-year-old French tourist died on August 1 after he suffered injuries which appeared to have been caused by a shark. Ms Vargiolu said her family has lived on the beach for 36 years, and the two shark attacks this month were the first they had seen.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent their honeymoon on North Island, four years after they took a week-long break on the island of Desroches.
