Egyptian prosecutors have demanded the death sentence for former president Hosni Mubarak.
They are calling for the same for additional defendants, including Mubarak’s two sons and the former interior minister for their alleged roles in the slaughter of protesters in the uprising that signalled Mubarak's overthrow.
Mubarak is being tried in Cairo on charges of conspiracy to kill demonstrators. He denies the allegations.
More than 800 protesters were killed during the 18-day revolt before Mubarak was finally ousted on 11 February.
Mustafa Khater told the court: "The prosecution demands the maximum penalty against Mubarak and the rest of the accused, which is death by hanging.
"The killing of one person calls for a death penalty so what would the court say in a case where hundreds have been killed."
“He [Mubarak] can never, as the head of state, claim that he did not know what was going on,” chief prosecutor Mustafa Suleiman told the court.
