Winter is fast approaching, and we need to ensure we're fully prepared for whatever the weather may throw at us. Cold and miserable weather can leave hair dry and damaged, and as a result we all need to step up our haircare routines.

Often, everyone has an array of products that make up their hair care routines, but during the run-up to Christmas, more than ever, it can seem impossible to afford the TLC that our hair deserves for party season.

However, it's not all doom and gloom, as the ingredients for excellent hair care are often hiding in our cupboards.

From the fridge to the fruit bowl, there are many surprising, everyday household items that can bring your hair back to life.

I've compiled my favourite household hair hacks, to help you and your hair stay radiant as the days grow darker!

Green Tea envy

If your hair is looking a little dull, try using a green tea hair mask. Green tea is less oxidised than your typical English tea, and therefore contains more electrons, which provides our hair with extra shine. Soak three green tea bags in a bowl of boiling water, and allow to cool. Once cool, remove the tea bags and soak your hair with the mixture. Leave to soak on your locks for 10-15 minutes, before rinsing and revealing your replenished and glossy hair.

Magic mayonnaise

Usually a much loved dinner table condiment, mayonnaise is being used more and more frequently as an intensive hair treatment. Mayonnaise contains an array of ingredients such as soybean oil, eggs and vinegar. Soybean oil contains a number of nutrients, including vitamin K, which fights breakage, split ends and dryness. Eggs are filled with protein, which strengthens the hair, whilst the vinegar restores a healthy pH balance. After using a mayonnaise treatment, hair is left softer, stronger and noticeably glossier! If you wish to introduce mayonnaise into your haircare routine, I'd suggest using it as a hair mask. You can apply mayonnaise to dry or wet hair for this. Apply the mayonnaise all over, ensuring every strand of hair is covered. Once applied, cover and allow the mayonnaise to sink into your hair. Rinse off as normal and dry to discover well-moisturised hair, which has a distinct glossy look.

Lemon juice locks

If you're craving long and thick hair, lemon juice is the perfect, natural trick, due to its high content of vitamin C, calcium and magnesium, amongst many other nutrients. The best way to encourage hair growth using lemon juice is to apply it directly to the scalp, as this can help strengthen the roots. If you have naturally dark hair, or professionally coloured hair, it's important to remember that lemon juice contains bleaching properties and could alter the colour of your hair if left on. If you want your hair to be a lighter shade without the damage that comes with hair dye, apply lemon juice to the lengths and ensure that your hair is in direct sunlight for a minimum of 30 minutes.
