As many as one in 30 people in London were currently infected with Covid-19 as of January 2, new modelling reveals.
Data collected by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) break down the Covid-19 infection levels regionally across England, with the latest available figures showing the situation as of Saturday.
The south-west has the lowest levels of infection in the country, with one in 125 people – 0.79% of the population – thought to be infected with Covid.
But amid the rapid spread of the new strain in London and the south-east, levels of infection are more than quadruple this figure there. In the capital, an estimated 3.33% had Covid-19 on January 2, around one in 30 people.
ONS figures also show that 2.72% of people in London are thought to be infected with the new mutated variant. This figure, as of January 2, stands at 1.28% for the whole of England.
It was revealed on Tuesday evening, during a press briefing held by Boris Johnson, that more than a million people across England – about one in 50 – had Covid-19 last week.
There are five regions where more than 2% of people are thought to have had Covid-19 as of January 2 – the north-west, East Midlands, east of England, London and the south-east.
