Woken up with the mother of all hangovers this morning? Head thumping like there's a miniature brass band camped out in your ear canal? Mouth as dry as a cardboard box filled with porridge oats? Do you even remember what normal feels like?

Maybe you shouldn't have got the shots in last night, but it's too late now. Let's deal with the case in hand and ease your horrific hangover.

1. Pop some painkillers. Sounds obvious, but a Paracetamol/Ibuprofen or two will sort your headache and cool you down because sweating all the vodka you knocked back out of your face is not attractive.

The NHS advises you should steer well clear of aspirin. While it will shift your headache it "may further irritate the stomach and increase nausea and sickness." No one wants that.

2. Exercise. While there's no research to prove exercise will rid you of your hangover it will certainly boost your mood. Plus, burning off those excess calories in all that wine will ease the boozy blues.

3. Sex. In the same vein as exercise, getting frisky between the sheets can help boost your mood and help you forget about your stomach-churning hangover.

According to Joris Verster, assistant professor at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, "There is no research that shows that sex will make a hangover go away, but maybe it will make the time go faster.

"If it makes you happy, go for it."

4. Water. As your extremely frequent trips to the ladies during the course of last night informed you, booze is a diuretic and can cause dehydration. Daniel Hall-Flavin, a consultant in addiction psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic recommends ordering a glass of water to go with every drink you pour down throughout the evening.

But if you forget, rehydrating in the morning is the best way to ease all hangover ailments.

5. Food. While you can't take back the drink that pushed you over the edge, you can eat your way to a happier hangover.

"Alcohol is a burden for the liver so after a heavy night out a big fry up is one of the worst choices you can make to combat a hangover," explains Zoe Copsey, Head of Nutrition at Lomax Bespoke Fitness, Nutrition and Wellbeing.

"Instead, the key is to be kind to your liver by supporting its detoxification processes as well as re-hydrating your body."
