Although it's only been two weeks since you officially started that diet, chances are you've struggled more than expected.
A recent American survey published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that 54% of people give up on their resolutions within six months, with only 8% succeeding by the end of the year.
So perhaps you could do with a little more help than your calorie counter is giving you.
On his entertaining YouTube channel Quirkology, British psychologist Richard Wiseman offers 10 different tricks to stop you overeating.
From switching to smaller plates (not because you'll reduce food quantity, but so your portion size will appear larger), to putting mirrors in your kitchen, his advice is designed to nudge your brain into eating less.
Psychologist Richard Wiseman suggests that placing a mirror in your kitchen could help your diet
Perhaps his most simple piece of advice is to invest in some red crockery.
Wiseman explains: "Research shows that people eat fewer snacks when served on red plates, perhaps because red is associated with stop. When you have the choice go for red plates and bowls."
Wiseman is the best-selling author of popular psychology books such as Quirkology, 59 Seconds and The Luck Factor and has a professorship in the public understanding of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire.
Other ingenious tips in his video include using your non-dominant hand when reaching for snacks, swapping wide glasses for tall thin ones and eating gum when you feel hungry. Although avoid mint flavour, as it makes other foods taste strange!
You might also want to consider taking a photograph of all the unhealthy food you eat, as Wiseman suggests this could help you cut down on unhealthy eating by a third.
