It's probably the kind of punishment we'd want for other people's kids, but not our own. Heavens to betsy, no!

And parents Gentry and Renee Nickell are now regretting meting out the unusual discipline to their own teenage daughter.

For they made the disrespectful 13-year-old stand by the road holding a sign which read: "I'm a Self-entitled teenager w/no Respect for authority. I'm also super smart, yet I have 3 "D's" because I DON'T CARE."

Unfortunately, passing motorists thought the unorthodox discipline method was not just unusual, but cruel.

Many took pictures and video of the teen which found their way onto Facebook.

One motorist even called the police, who visited the scene and only left after receiving assurance that the girl was aware of her punishment and wasn't in any harm.

But the mum and dad, from Crestview, Florida, defended their actions.

"We got to the point where we just didn't know what else to do," said Renee.

She says she got the idea from a Christian counsellor several years ago.

The Nickells say their daughter has become increasingly disrespectful at home and school since her uncle - Renee's brother - was killed in Afghanistan in December 2011. She has been unresponsive to other forms of punishment including being grounded.

"We just felt like she just kind of gave up," said Renee, who also has two younger children.

Gentry was present with his daughter the entire time. He says as the time passed, he could see moments in which his daughter was thinking about the actions that had led her to that corner.

"At the end, she gave me a hug in front of the police officer and told me she was sorry," he said. The Nickells claim their daughter's behaviour has improved since the incident.
