The former professional footballer has been unveiled as one of the 10 stars entering the jungle when the new series launches later this week, and it seems he has different reasons for taking part than most others.

“I am very competitive, but I am not going on the show for money,” he explained.

“My fee is going to charity. I am doing this show for charity and for my children.”

He continued: “I am not going on for fame or recognition. I see the show can revitalise people’s careers but if someone in the camp wants to further their career in the media, I would rather they win than me. Obviously if I did win, I’d be over the moon - but it’s not the be all and end all.”

During his football career, he played for England 33 times, as well as Ipswich Town, Newcastle United and West Ham, and explained he is hoping to paint the sport in a good light, following Jimmy Bullard’s stint on the show last year.

“Jimmy Bullard did really well and hopefully I can do well too,” he said.

“Your stereotype of a footballer is probably not that great when it comes to what people have to say. Hopefully I can change people’s minds after I go in. I am going to be myself in the jungle.”

'I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’ launches on Sunday (15 November) at 9pm on ITV.
