The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has asked police to suspend the head of the crime intelligence secret slush fund, Major General Obed Nemutanzhela, as he faces a R500,000 fraud investigation, according to EWN.
EWN said it was in possession of a letter where Ipid tells acting national police commissioner Lesetja Mothiba that, should Nemutanzhela continue in his position, it could hamper the investigation.
In 2013, Nemutanzhela allegedly signed off a cash advance for installing blinds at a crime intelligence safe house of over R500,000, when the job cost less than R100,000.
He faces charges of fraud and theft of state money.
Police said they are looking into the claims.
