ITV Gives Sue Perkins And Mel Giedroyc Chat Show The Great British Take-Off

Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, hosts of the BBC's The Great British Bake Off, have had their ITV chat show axed after just one series.

The two presented Mel & Sue, a daytime chat show featuring a mix of celebrity guests and cooking - a format similar to their late 1990s Channel 4 series, Light Lunch, which launched their television career as a comedy duo.

But their latest chat show, which launched in January in the 4pm slot, only attracted around 750,000 viewers and was beaten in the ratings war by the BBC's Antiques Road Trip and Escape To The Country, both of which pull in audiences of two million.

By contrast, 10 million viewers watched the sixth series premiere of The Great British Bake Off last Wednesday, where Mel and Sue exchanged witty, innuendo-laden banter with the contestants and judges.

An ITV spokesperson said: "Mel and Sue are great talents and we hope to work with them on other projects in the future", confirming that they were already in talks.

Mel & Sue is the second show the pair have had axed by ITV: their comedy panel show, Casting Couch, got the chop in 1999 after a six-episode run.
