Family Of Missing Man Thank Police Efforts

The family of a British man missing after his boat sank off the coast of France have thanked crews for their efforts as the search for him is called off.

Jeffrey Clare, 66, of Draycott, Derby, was travelling in a tugboat, named Aquarius, with two other crew members when they got into trouble around six miles off the coast of France on Monday.

Two other crew members were rescued but Mr Clare is still unaccounted for.

Derbyshire Police said the coastguard received a distress call at around 8.40am from a tugboat in the area of the Bay of Biscay and a search got under way.

Today Mr Clare's family thanked search and rescue teams for their efforts.

Mr Clare's wife Val said in a statement today: "The tragic sinking of the vessel Aquarius has been a great shock to the crew and families involved.

"We are very grateful for all efforts made during the rescue and subsequent search for the missing crew member.

"We have been informed that the search for Jeff has been called off and we would like to thank everyone involved.

"The family would now appreciate privacy in order to come to terms with our loss."

Derbyshire Police said they are continuing to liaise with the French authorities who are investigating the incident and that specially trained family liaison officers are working with the family to keep them informed.
