Tory MPs have been accused of a “shocking lack of awareness” after jeering Jeremy Corbyn for wearing a green tie to honour the victims of the Grenfell tower fire – in front of survivors and families sat the Commons public gallery.
The Labour leader wore the tie while awaiting a statement from Boris Johnson on the official inquiry into the disaster, which reported on Wednesday.
Theresa May, who was prime minister when the June 2017 fire claimed the lives of 72 people, rebuked fellow Tories for jeering, reportedly telling them “it’s about Grenfell”.
The incident forced Corbyn to pause during his opening contribution at prime minister’s questions to tell Tories: “It’s alright, it’s alright I know you’re all jealous of my tie but it’s okay.”

Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner, who was in the chamber, said: “Tory backbenchers jeering Jeremy Corbyn for the colour of his green tie! It’s about respect for Grenfell.
“Shocking lack of awareness from some Tory MPs.”
Labour MP Paula Sherriff added: “Many Tory MPs are pointing and laughing at Jeremy Corbyn’s bright green tie today at PMQs today.
“It’s a tribute to those who suffered and died in the Grenfell tragedy.
“You can’t buy class.”
Tory MP Huw Merriman later joked that it was a “shame” that Corbyn was not following Commons Speaker John Bercow in wearing a tie to show his support for his beloved Arsenal FC ahead of their league cup tie against Liverpool.
“Thank you very much Mr Speaker, It’s a pleasure to see you in your Arsenal tie, I’ve worn mine as well.
“I’m sorry the leader of the opposition has not worn his own.”
