Jeremy Corbyn has received a boost after a poll found he is backed by two-thirds of Labour activists.

The veteran left-winger was elected the party's leader in September by 59% of members, registered supporters and affiliates.

But research by YouGov for The Times suggests 66% now think he is doing “well”.

The firm canvassed opinions from a sample of those who were entitled to vote in the contest. Some 86% of people who cast a ballot for him were said to be happy with his performance.

The findings underline how difficult it would be for Labour MPs to unseat the leader, despite growing frustration about his approach and positions on a wide range of policies.

Other polls have suggested that Labour is trailing the Tories in voting intentions by around 15 percentage points.
