Jeremy Hunt has finally spoken out about possibly the most controversial aspect of his career that has dogged him for years – people accidentally calling him “Jeremy C**t”.
The faux pas has become an almost regular feature of live political broadcasts and most recently Victoria Derbyshire fell victim just this week.
Speaking to Chopper’s Brexit Podcast on Thursday, Hunt addressed the issue, and appeared to suggest that it doesn’t always happen by accident.
He said: “I’m used to it. I had this when I was at school. Personally I think people should just grow up and get over the fact that my last name rhymes with a rather unpleasant word.”
Derbyshire’s slip of the tongue earlier this week certainly appeared In a debate about who should replace Theresa May as Tory Party leader, she asked one of her guests: “You say that the man that you’re backing – Jeremy C**t…
“I’m so sorry, Jeremy Hunt,” the BBC presenter corrected as she realised her mistake.
“I’ve never said that before in my life. It’s usually men who say that, so I really really want to apologise, I’m sorry.”
And just last summer, Radio 4 Today presenter Justin Webb fumbled his consonants while referring to the then-health secretary.
“The paper says that health secretary Jeremy C**t ... Hunt is understood to favour a cap on social care,” he said.
And then there was this unfortunate framing incident...
But perhaps the worst day for the unfortunately-named leadership contender was back in 2010 when Radio 4’s Jim Naughtie blundered over the word ‘Hunt’... only for Andrew Marr to accidentally say the exact same thing when reporting on the mistake later the very same day.
Oner person who definitely did mean it but managed to say it without actually saying it, was singer James Blunt in 2016.
