Earlier this week, Jessie J caused a storm of abuse when the singer announced on Twitter that her bisexuality was just 'a phase'. Many have criticised her for her rash and blatantly harsh words - and really I don't blame them. Minutes after her rant, her tweets we're deleted, but in the eyes of the Internet the damage was already done.
Jessie J wrote: "Remember the thing that you tried/did back in the day. The phase you had? That is so not YOU anymore?! And you look back and think wow how I've changed"
She then continued: "Something that you don't even talk about or want to talk about anymore. Because you've moved on? That was just part of you growing up? Discovering yourself and working out what you liked and disliked.... Remember?"
Then: "People can change. As they should. And I have changed and grown up ALOT, and that's allowed. And I feel more comfortable in my own skin now than ever before. We all are on a journey and I refuse to feel boxed and judged because of how I felt once!"
Finally after a long rant Jessie confirmed the meaning behind her vague tweets after a fan asked her to "get straight to the point" she then responded: "I only fancy/date/love men and only men. Is that 'straight to the point' enough?"
These strong words we're obviously of much regret by Jessie J, (or her management) as minutes later the words we're gone from her Twitter forever.
Famously in 2012, the book "Who's Laughing Now" (Chloe Govan) 'outed' Jessie describing her as 100% gay - completely discarding any hint of bisexuality. This caused uproar in the media, her 'Lesbianism' making front-page news across the UK. Jessie was quick to refute these claims of lesbianism - however this led to her publicly confirming her bisexuality.
Additionally in the Book by Govan, it claims that Jessie is afraid of coming out as Lesbian because she might lose her deal with Universal - perhaps this the real reason for her Twitter rant?
Personally, I've never really been a fan myself - to me her music is numbingly repetitive and her lyrics awfully hypocritical (It is about the money Jessie, you're worth £8million) - However, when the singer came out as bisexual, I stood up and supported her. I felt it were the first time I believed the words she was saying. I had admired her courage to stand up and be a LGBT spokesperson for the younger generation.
Now, as many others do, I feel betrayed. Not that she was an important part of my every day life- I just feel deflated and disappointed that another role model has given in to the stigma of carrying the LGBT tag. Perhaps she just didn't understand the knock on effect it would cause to her younger LGBT fans - many regarding her as a hero to look up to.
Albeit, if her bisexuality were just a publicity stunt to gain a 'gay following' - it's a sad, disturbing glimpse at the morals of the music industry. Or as I more likely believe, she just can't handle the pressures of being famous and LGBT.
My message to you is Jessie, "Just be true to who you are".
