Jo Brand has completed the most difficult section of her 150-mile coast-to-coast Sport Relief challenge, battling 70mph winds and horizontal rain to conquer the Pennines.

Brand, 58, set off from the Sheffield side of the Woodhead Pass not long before the route was closed to all traffic due to the gale force winds from Storm Jonas, which left the road littered with overturned lorries.

She was blown off her feet at one point on day five of her Hell of a Walk, but by the time she dropped into Greater Manchester she was telling BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright that she did not feel too bad.

Her crew confessed that the weather nearly meant the walk was called off for the day.

Sacha Mirzoeff, executive producer of the film documenting Brand's every step, said on the official liveblog: "Today is by far the most dramatic and potentially dangerous on the walk.

"It was nearly called off altogether for health and safety reasons after several lorries blew over in Storm Jonas on the Peaks. But Jo wanted to continue."

Brand was joined by Davina McCall for the last section of day five, into the east of Manchester. McCall completed her own BT Sport Relief Challenge in 2014 when she ran, swam and cycled more than 450 miles from Edinburgh to London in seven days.

The comedian is walking across England, from east to west, in seven days and is planning to finish in Liverpool on Friday.

The BT-sponsored event began on the banks of the Humber last week.
