A jogger has died after an electricity cable came down in a field setting the area alight.

The man was killed at about 8.40pm last night in Newport, Essex whilst jogging with two companions. He was in his 50s and from the nearby Saffron Walden area.

A fire service spokesman said: "Crews arriving at the scene requested the attendance of an ambulance for one male casualty suffering severe burns."

He was pronounced dead at the scene whilst two other patients were treated for minor electric shocks.

A spokeswoman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: "This was a tragic and very difficult incident. Our thoughts are with the man's family."

The electricity board was the called to isolate power to the cable

The spokesman said: "Police have launched a joint investigation with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed."

The area has been made safe but pieces of cable were still visible laying in the field. Only two of the usual three power cables hung overhead.
