In the aftermath of the horrific shooting of nine churchgoers in Charleston last week, one detail that seemed particularly jarring was the Confederate flag flying over the state's Capitol.
Many Southern states still choose to display the Civil War design which carries many racist connotations after being the preferred banner for a number of white supremacist organisations.
Debate after the shootings has been characteristically vague as lawmakers and politicians tread carefully for fear of upsetting... well white people basically.
Enter John Oliver who used his "Last Week Tonight" show to launch a scathing attack on the flag.
He said: "The Confederate flag should only be used on t-shirts, belt buckles and bumper stickers to help the rest of us identify the worst people in the world."
