The Crown newcomer Josh O’Connor has insisted that his role in Netflix’s royal drama has not changed his mind about the monarchy.
Josh is about to make his debut as the grown-up Prince Charles in the third series of The Crown, opposite Emerald Fennell who will play his love interest, Camilla Parker-Bowles.
But despite immersing himself in the role, Josh has admitted that he’s still no fan of the monarchy.
“I’m still a republican,” he said at the show’s London premiere. “But, I think, I’m a big fan of them as personalities.”
Despite his own feelings about the royal family, Josh added that he thinks Charles will be more than qualified when his time comes to step up to the throne.
“I think he will be very well-rehearsed, it’s been a long time of rehearsal,” he said.
“He’s had an incredible mother whose done an incredible job. I think he’d be a great king.”
Josh’s comments come after his on-screen dad Tobias Menzies shared similar sentiments in a recent interview with Radio Times.
Tobias – who takes over the role of Prince Philip from Matt Smith in the new series of The Crown – explained: “Instinctively I don’t love the idea of hereditary power. But given that there isn’t a lot of power attached to that role, maybe it’s a good idea.”
He continued: “I’d definitely think about not accepting an OBE. Inherently I don’t massively agree with the honours system. It feels like it entrenches privilege.”
The third series of The Crown debuts on Netflix on Sunday 17 November, with the streaming service also making the first episode available to watch for free to non-subscribers.
