News International has been forced to pay out hundreds of thousands of pounds to victims of phone hacking by News of the World.

The settlements agreed between Rupert Murdoch's News International and the claimants were read out at the High Court in London on Thursday.

Jude Law has been paid £130,000 plus costs while his former wife, actress Sadie Frost, was given £50,000 and his assistant Ben Jackson was given £40,000.

Chelsea and England footballer Ashley Cole accepted damages but the figures was not disclosed. Cole's lawyer, Graham Sheer, accepted £25,000 plus costs. Welsh rugby star Gavin Henson was given £40,000.

Former Labour deputy prime minister Lord Prescott was given £40,000 while his assistant Joan Hammell was handed £40,000 plus costs.

Labour MP Chris Bryant, who has long pursued the Murdoch media empire over hacking by the now defunct tabloid, accepted a settlement of £30,000. And Labour MP Claire Ward also accepted substantial damages.

Speaking outside the court, Bryant said News International had been "lying for year after year" and said he expected more people to go to jail as a result of the scandal.

MP Denis MacShane accepted £32,500 while human rights activist Joan Smith, who was targeted because she was in relationship with MacShane, was given £27,500.

Guy Pelly, a friend of Prince Harry, accepted 40,000 in damages plus legal costs.

Tom Rowland, a journalist who worked for News International's Times and Sunday Times accepted £25,000 plus costs.

Other payouts confirmed on Thursday's include £30,000 to Lisa Gower, who was in a relationship with actor Steve Coogan.

Christopher Shipman, the son of serial killer Harold Shipman, accepted "substantial" damages but the figure was not revealed.

Ciara Parkes, a PR consultant, was handed £35,000 and an anonymous claimant received £60,000.
