A fast and efficient way of packing in your five a day, if you haven't joined the juice brigade yet you need to plug in that blender because liquidising your leafy veg isn't just a passing foodie fad.

Like the Jaegerbombs of the health world (let's not sugarcoat it - some of those hardcore green juices can make you wince!), as well as being able to knock them back in seconds, they pack a punch and it doesn't take long to feel the after effects... or see them. It's why right now, everyone considering doing a new year detox will be scrutinising the juice selection in their local supermarket looking for a miracle cure to counteract those mince pies and mulled wines. And no we're not talking Innocents' no bits OJ!

Our advice, though, would be to get out of the juice aisle and back up into the fruit and veg section, because while off the shelf juices are better than nothing, at home bespoke blends and couture concoctions are the way forward. Yes, blitzing your fruit and veg can seem a bit faffy, but get the right juice recipe book, nail your fruit and veg knowhow and it'll soon become a breeze.

On our radar right now are Juice by skincare queen, Liz Earle (out 8 Jan) and Plenish by Kara Rosen (if you recognise the name it's because you can buy her readymade juices at Ocado). What's good about them is whether you want a detox, are already a hardcore juice devotee, need to lose weight or have been advised to try juices for ongoing health issues (skin problems, IBS, low sex drive), the juice recipes are really easy to follow. Plus you don't need endless ingredients and they break down why you should be guzzling that specific cleansing concoction too – eg. It's good for your liver/has endless anti-ageing antioxidants in/it debloats...
