The Archbishop of Canterbury has said he is praying for America after Donald Trump’s surprise victory in the presidential election.
Justin Welby said that the campaign ahead of election day had been “bitter”, adding that he hoped Trump would be given “wisdom, insight and grace” as he prepares to take office.

There was a marked absence of any congratulatory tone to the message.
Welby is tomorrow holding a bible study on Facebook Live on the subject of Jesus calming the storm.
The Archbishop was not the only one suggesting that US needed the prayers of the people as it reels from the results of the election.

Theresa May is among the political figures who have congratulated Trump on his victory.
In a statement on Wednesday morning, the prime minister said she would work with the new president to “ensure the security and prosperity” United Kingdom and the United States.
“I would like to congratulate Donald Trump on being elected the next President of the United States, following a hard-fought campaign,” she said.
“Britain and the United States have an enduring and special relationship based on the values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.
“We are, and will remain, strong and close partners on trade, security and defence. I look forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump, building on these ties to ensure the security and prosperity of our nations in the years ahead.”
As Trump was elected as the US’ 45 president, stock markets tanked, the dollar plunged and many commentators compared the result to ‘Brexit’ and the anti-Establishment anger that fuelled Britain’s exit from the EU.
