Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned - or in Katy Perry's case, don't mess with a female pop star when she has a microphone and swing at hand.

The flamboyant singer debuted her new song Wide Awake while suspended on a swing high above the stage at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Calling it her most personal song, Katy, who won the Spotlight award, detailed the heartbreak of her split from husband Russell Brand while sky-high acrobats and dancers performed alongside her. As you do.

The song features the line: "I wish I knew then what I know now/I wouldn't dive in, wouldn't bow down."

Katy's new boyfriend, Florence and The Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd, was expected to accompany her, but there was no sign of the rocker at the ceremony. The singer took her grandmother to the event instead.

Adele and LMFAO were the big winners, with the soul singer picking up 12 trophies, including Top Artist and Top Female.

There were also award wins for Justin Bieber, U2 and Coldplay while Taylor Swift was named Billboard Woman of the Year and Lil' Wayne was crowned Top Male Artist.
